Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more round of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants can get flustered. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical approach in just about every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complicated at the outset, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an exciting array of betting possibilities and because you have numerous players battling for the high hand, as well as a few battling for the low. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
