Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he liked betting on numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a bit and headed to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were tough as he played extensive hours and don’t win most times. He made some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He believed he possibly could boost his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate more on poker.
The real advancement in his game happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would regularly compete against one another. Howard was able to access several of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking skills. He applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL texas hold’em.
Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. She was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie to move out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker world has ever seen. He moved to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the following decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
