Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker contender in the world by quite a few of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before reaching turning one. His grandfather taught him one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wanted to discover everything he could about poker. Phil would tell his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t allow the detrimental comments from others annihilate his ambition of becoming one of the strongest poker competitors on the planet.
He started competing seriously after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his abilities at the casinos in Atlantic City. The first few years for him were a teaching experience and coming away with a win wasn’t a regular thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made 2 final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he defeated a number of the well known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his skills to the successive level and moved out west to Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to dedication and an eternal passion for poker. Phil states that he’s picking up skills every day and is very abashed about his accomplishments. He admits to making errors in each game of poker and constantly aspires to get better.
Even though Phil has won some big tournaments, he favors winning money games on a regular basis.
