Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he enjoyed playing numerous card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and moved away to New York City to play some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were tough as he would play countless hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he might better his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus attention more on poker.

The definite improvement in his game began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would frequently challenge each other. Howard was able to access some of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would tweak his logical thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of No-Limit holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker world ever. Howard Lederer moved to Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the next 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
