Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha hi/lo begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting follows and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where many entrants can get flustered. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use exactly three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical notion in almost every poker game.
A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem complicated at first, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic nuances of play simply enough. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming range of betting choices and because you have many individuals battling for the high, as well as several trying for the low hand. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
