Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker contender on the planet by most of the top-ranked pros. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather showed him to penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wished to learn whatever he could about poker. Phil routinely told his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t allow the adverse feedback from others kill his goal of being one of the best poker competitors in the world.
Phil started playing seriously after getting a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his skills at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for Phil were a learning experience and coming away with a win wasn’t a normal outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he achieved two final tables and came away with his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he destroyed many of the well known professionals including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to dedication and a continuing passion for poker. Phil says that he is picking up skills every single day and is quite humble about his accomplishments. Phil admits to making errors in each game of poker and always strives to improve.
Although Ivey has won some big tournaments, he prefers destroying money games on a normal basis.
