Phil Ivey has been branded as the greatest poker player in the world by most of the top professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before reaching the age of 1. His grandpa taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup everything he possibly could about poker. Phil routinely told his parents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil did not permit the adverse feedback from others destroy his dream of becoming one of the greatest poker competitors in the world.
He began competing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his abilities at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The initial few years for him were a learning opportunity and winning was not a common thing at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made 2 final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the closing table he destroyed many of the better known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Sin City. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Phil credits his success to hard work and an immeasurable passion for poker. Phil says that he’s learning every day and is incredibly abashed about his accomplishments. He knows he makes blunders in each game of poker and always strives to improve.
Although Phil has come first in some big-time tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a normal basis.
