Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha hi low begins like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must utilize exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in nearly every poker game.

The low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem complex at the outset, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an exciting array of wagering possibilities and because you have numerous individuals trying for the high, and a few trying for the low. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
