Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi/low begins like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting follows in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical concept in nearly every poker game.

A low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.

While it seems difficult at the start, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an overwhelming range of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have many players battling for the high hand, along with several shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
