Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a few players can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same approach in just about every poker game.
The lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem complicated at the outset, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha Hi-Lo provides an overwhelming array of betting possibilities and seeing that you have several players battling for the high hand, along with many battling for the low hand. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha Hi-Lo.
