Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The players will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many players get flustered. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical concept in nearly every poker game.

The lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

While it seems difficult at the start, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base nuances of play easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing assortment of wagering choices and because you have many individuals battling for the high, along with several battling for the low hand. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
