Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he liked taking part in various card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting really competitive in these particular card games while playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York to participate in some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he played countless hours and lost most times. He made some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he could boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and concentrate even more on poker.
The real improvement in his skills happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would regularly challenge each other. He was able to access a number of the foremost players in chess. With their help, he would tweak his logical thinking techniques. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL Texas Holdem.
He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. She was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest female players the poker world ever. Howard Lederer moved to Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
