Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more round of betting ensues. After all the players have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some players can get confused. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in almost all poker games.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

Although it seems complex at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the base subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing array of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have numerous individuals battling for the high, along with several shooting for the low. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
