Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so quickly.
Omaha hi lo begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of betting happens. After all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where many players can get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical approach in nearly every poker game.
A low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.
It may seem complex at first, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing assortment of wagering choices and seeing that you have several individuals battling for the high, along with a few battling for the low hand. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha Hi-Lo.
