Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha hi lo starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants can get baffled. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical approach in nearly all poker games.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complex initially, after a few rounds you will be able to get the basic nuances of play with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an amazing assortment of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have several individuals battling for the high, as well as many trying for the low. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha hi/low.
