Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha Hi-Lo begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering follows where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical notion in nearly every poker game.
The low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.
While it seems difficult at first, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting range of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have many individuals battling for the high hand, and many trying for the low hand. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
