Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker competitor on the globe by quite a few of the top professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before reaching the age of 1. His grandfather taught him penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wanted to pickup whatever he possibly could about poker. Phil routinely told his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He didn’t allow the negative feedback from others destroy his dream of becoming one of the strongest poker players in the world.
Phil started playing seriously after getting a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his techniques at the casinos of Atlantic City. The first number of years for him were a teaching experience and winning was not a common thing at the time. He became known at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he destroyed many of the better known professionals including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Las Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his success to discipline and an immeasurable love for the game of poker. He states that he’s learning every single day and is incredibly humble about his achievements. He admits to making mistakes in each session of poker and constantly aspires to get better.
Even though Phil has won some big-time tournaments, he likes destroying cash games on a regular basis.
